Introducing Fund Her Future - Our #GivingTuesday Campaign

November 18, 2020 – #GivingTuesday is coming! Save the date: December 1. #GivingTuesday was created in 2012 to encourage people to pay it forward and has since grown into a massive movement to celebrate the power of people when they come together. In 2019, #GivingTuesday raised $511,000,000 for charities across the United States.
This year for #GivingTuesday, Amref Health Africa is raising money for our Fund Her Future campaign to support girls at risk to FGM and child marriage. We started Fund Her Future last year to support our Girls Scholarship program that provides girls at risk to FGM/C and child marriage with tuition, room and board, essential school supplies, and more. Girls who receive the scholarship are also trained in leadership and advocacy skills to become anti-FGM and anti-child marriage ambassadors in their communities.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to adapt the program to the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 has closed schools in Kenya. For many girls, schools served as a safe haven from the gender-based violence (GBV) they might face at home, including FGM and child marriage. School closures have led to an increase in GBV against young girls. A national helpline in Kenya for GBV received 1,108 calls in the month of June 2020, compared to just 86 in February 2020.
$10,000 will allow the program to establish a Girls’ Mentorship Home Visit Program for 45 girls and provide each of them with Dignity Kits – backpacks pre-packed with sanitary napkins, underwear, soap, towels, a flashlight, a toothbrush and other necessities. We can also provide 200 girls with solar powered lights and a radio, enabling them to listen to academic lessons aired by the Kenyan government.
